Here are the top stories today in Tampa:
- U.S. President Joe Biden spoke at University of Tampa on Thursday afternoon after landing at Tampa International Airport on Air Force One. The President discussed Medicare, Social Security, and other health care priorities for his administration and urged Congress to protect the social safety net as government budget negotiations continue between Democrats and Republicans. - A Hernando County High School student was shot and killed, and an adult woman was injured in a double shooting in Brooksville on Tuesday. The student was on the school's tennis team and a member of the student council, according to the school district. Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities. (Fox 13 Tampa)
- A new report from Human Rights Watch states that Hillsborough County judges blocked 52 percent of abortions for minors in 2021, while Pinellas County judges blocked zero. The reports comes as the Republican-led state legislature and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have promised to introduce new legislation to reduce the amount of time to get an abortion to six weeks. Judge Jared Smith made national headlines for blocking a teenage abortion over a GPA score and was later removed from office, before being re-appointed by DeSantis. (Creative Loafing Tampa)
- Detroit Wing Company is opening its first location in Tampa on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 5006 East Fowler Ave. Prizes will be given out to guests who arrive early on opening day. The restaurant concept has been called the "Best Wings in Michigan" by several media outlets. (That's So Tampa)
- Tampa City Council member Bill Carlson has raised $70,300 in his quest for re-election in Tampa District 4, according to his campaign. Carlson is facing Blake Casper in the race, a former owner of the largest McDonald's franchise in Tampa and co-founder of the Oxford Exchange. Casper is worth over $300 million.
