Dry Conditions Spark Fire Warnings In Tampa Bay Area

The Tampa Bay area is in for a mild, sunny weekend, but dry conditions are creating some concerns.

TAMPA, FL — Folks with big outdoor plans over the weekend are likely to find conditions almost postcard perfect. The National Weather Service, however, is warning that some hazards linger in the wake of a cold front that pushed through the area.

The biggest concern on land, forecasters say, is the potential for fire weather throughout the region. A string of sunny, dry days with low humidity levels could create the perfect conditions for fires to spread. With that in mind, a red flag warning has gone up throughout the Tampa Bay area.

“Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly,” the weather service warned. “Outdoor burning is not recommended.”

Forecasters expect relative humidity on Friday to drop below 35 percent in the inland areas. Similar conditions are also expected on Sunday.

Strong onshore winds have also given rise to concerns along area beaches. Forecasters say the rip current risk is high throughout the region. Swimmers should check for warnings before diving into local waters. Boaters, too, are being warned that conditions are not ideal for small craft operators.

Fire and water warnings aside, the weekend is expected to be a beautiful one. Friday is anticipated to kick things off with sunny skies and high in the low 70s throughout much of the region. Mostly clear overnight conditions are expected with a low around 50 degrees. Saturday should be a bit warmer in both the day and nighttime hours, but the high is not expected to break 75 degrees.

Things are expected to warm up a little heading into Sunday. A return to the low 80s is anticipated with an overnight low around 60 degrees. Rain isn’t expected to play a major role in the forecast into next week at least.
