Firefighters Brave Blaze To Save 3 Cats, Hamster In Palm River Fire

​Firefighters received several calls from residents reports flames and smoke coming from a house at 1133 S 70th St. at 3:12 p.m.

PALM RIVER, TAMPA — There were no people to rescue, but that didn't stop Hillsborough County firefighters from risking their lives to save three cats and a hamster at a house fire in Palm River Thursday.

Firefighters received several calls from residents reports flames and smoke coming from a house at 1133 S 70th St. at 3:12 p.m. Engine 15 was first on the scene, confirming smoke and heavy flames blowing out of the front of the residence.

Crews quickly pulled a handline, knocking the fire down from the front as they made entry to battle the blaze. Additional units assisted with water supply, ventilation and primary and secondary searches.

It took about 20 minutes to put out the flames, and the pets were rescued in the process with no injuries.

Crews also had to fight a grass fire sparked by the structure fire, to keep it from damaging nearby houses.

The cause of the fire was determined to be caused by cooking using an air fryer.
