Fletcher Avenue Lanes Closed After 'Cavern' Opens

Motorists are being asked to stay away from a stretch of Fletcher Avenue after lanes over the Hillsborough River eroded Tuesday.

TAMPA, FL — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is asking motorists to steer clear of westbound Fletcher Avenue lanes in the area of the Hillsborough River. The formation of a “cavern” under the westbound lanes has forced a closing, the agency reported Tuesday afternoon.

“The majority of the outside lane underneath the bridge has eroded,” an email from the sheriff’s office said. “All westbound traffic on Fletcher Avenue from I-75 to Telecom Parkway is shut down.”

Deputies say traffic is being rerouted southbound on Telecom Parkway, which loops back to Morris Bridge Road. Eastbound Fletcher Avenue remained opened, but was experiencing a backup, the agency reported.

“Repairs are expected to extend into the morning,” the sheriff’s office said.
