GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview April 12-14

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the South Tampa-Hyde Park area.

It's Thursday and you have no weekend plans. Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit.

Taste of South Tampa

Older & Lundy Attorneys at Law will present the eighth annual Taste of South Tampa Sunday, April 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. throughout Hyde Park Village. The Taste of South Tampa offers attendees the chance to sample food and beverages from local restaurants along with live music and other activities. VIP tickets are $45, regular admission is $35 and tickets for those age 11 to 20 are $20.

Davis Islands Relay for Life

The Davis Islands Relay for Life will take place Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13 from 6 p.m. to noon at the Davis Islands Seaplane Basin, 1002 Severn Ave., Tampa. The theme this year is "Rock for a Cure." There will be food and games as well as opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. and a luminaria ceremony for victims and survivors of cancer at 9:30 p.m.

Cyber Safety Seminar

Cyber safety expert Justin DeBosh will be the keynote speaker at the University of Tampa's Cyber Safety Seminar Saturday, April 13 at 6:45 p.m. in the Crescent Club at UT, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Proceeds will benefit Miles for Hope and Delta Sigma Pi.

Ybor Aficionado Days

The Ybor City Chamber of Commerce will commemorate the manufacturing of the first cigar in Ybor City with the annual Ybor Aficionado Days Saturday, April 13 from 4 to 9 p.m. and Sunday April 14 11 a.m. at the Columbia Restaurant, 117 E. 7th Ave., Tampa, and other Ybor locations. During the Tapas Trail on Saturday, attendees can sample menu items from many of Ybor's finest dining establishments and close out the evening with desserts, spirits and smokes. On Sunday, there will be a traditional Spanish brunch and Tapas Cooking Challenge judged by local celebrities and culinary stars.The cost is $70 for admission to all events and $35 to $40 for individual events.

Ryan's Run

The third annual 5K in honor of Ryan McCall, a rising cross country and track runner at the University of Tampa who was killed in August 2009, will take place Saturday, April 13 from 6 to 9 a.m. at Centennial Park in Ybor City, 1600 E. 8th Ave., Tampa. Proceeds will support scholarships for are high school students with a passion for running.

Antiques Evaluations

Residents can have their antiques appraised Saturday, April 13 from 10 to 11:45 a.m. in the Music Room in Plant Hall at the University of Tampa, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa. The cost is $5 per item with a limit of four items per family. All proceeds will go to restoration of the museum.

Saturday Storytime

Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 213 N. Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa, hosts a weekly story hour for kids Saturdays at 11 a.m.

"'S Wonderful" on Stage

The David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts will present ’S Wonderful in the Jaeb Theater Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Five mini-musicals take audiences on a ride to the different places, times and styles that made the Gershwin brothers the most successful songwriting team in musical history. Regularly priced tickets for ’S Wonderful start at $32.50.

Cycling and Social

The Tampa Bay Running Club hosts a cycle and social each Sunday at 4 p.m. starting from Marjorie Park Marina, 97 Columbia Dr., Tampa.
