Groin Shot Leads To Man’s Arrest

A Wednesday afternoon dispute prompted a lock-in at Robinson High and led to a man getting shot in the groin, police say.

TAMPA, FL — A 21-year-old man faces criminal charges after Tampa Police say a dispute between him and another man escalated to the point shots were fired Wednesday afternoon. The agency says the spat prompted a temporary lock-in at Robinson High School and sent the victim to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the groin.

According to police, officers were called out to investigate reports of a shooting near South Dale Mabry Highway and Ohio Avenue just after 2 p.m. May 3.

“Witnesses described two subjects arguing on the east side of Dale Mabry,” the agency explained. Ivan Diaz is accused of shooting at the man he was arguing with. When those shots missed, he’s accused of crossing the road to follow the man while continuing the argument.

“Diaz then shot the victim in the groin area and fled the scene,” an email from the police department said.

Police responded and set up a perimeter. Robinson was placed on “lock-in” status while the search continued.

Police say it only took a few minutes to track Diaz down. He was brought into custody and was being interviewed by detectives Wednesday afternoon.

The victim has not yet been identified. Authorities say the man was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not life threatening.

Further information, including the charges Diaz faces, are not yet available.
