TAMPA, FL — A home health assistant caring for a hospice patient faces multiple charges after deputies uncovered a case of financial exploitation, according to a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a delayed fraud report in the 14000 block of Clubhouse Circle in Tampa on March 4 around 4 p.m.

The victim, who is receiving hospice care, reported being defrauded by the health care worker, later identified Shawn Livingston, 57, who was hired to help with daily needs, the sheriff’s office said.

Livingston, who works for a home health care company, is accused of convincing the victim to use Zelle for service payments and then manipulating the transactions, transferring money to her personal accounts, paying her creditors and making payments to Carnival Cruise Line, the agency said.

Ultimately, she stole more than $7,000 since the fraud began on Jan. 28, investigators said.

Livingston, who was arrested Friday, was charged with exploitation of an elderly person, fraudulent use of personal information over $5,000, grand theft in the third-degree, fraudulent use of a credit card over $100 and two counts of uttering a forged instrument.

"The actions of this individual are unacceptable and despicable. Preying on a hospice patient, someone who relies on others for care and support, is a heartless and disgraceful betrayal," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "We are committed to protecting our most vulnerable residents. Let this serve as a clear message: this kind of abuse has no place in our community, and we will do everything possible to bring those responsible to justice.”
