Brutal Temps Trigger Heat Advisories, Daily Storms In FL Forecast

Flood risks, frequent lightning, strong wind gusts and sweltering temperatures could comprise this week's hot and rainy weather in Florida.

FLORIDA — Sweltering temperatures, and the chances of daily storms, will cover much of the Sunshine State this week. As a result of high temperatures, several heat advisories are in effect Monday for much of Florida.

And, mimicking last week's weather behavior, daily storms are expected this week throughout Florida, which could pose a risk of flooding and rip currents.

Heat indices of up to 111 degrees are expected in areas stretching from the central to northern region, the National Weather Service said.

With heat index values from 105 to 112 degrees expected in the Miami area, and values up to 112 degrees anticipated in Orlando, heat advisories have also been issued for these two Florida cities.

The hot temperatures could cause illnesses, weather officials said. Residents should drink plenty of fluids and remain in air-conditioned rooms. People are urged to stay out of the sun and to check on relatives or neighbors.

The weather service offered the following additional heat safety tips:

  • Take extra precautions when outside.
  • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.

Weather officials said Miami could experience scattered thunderstorms Monday afternoon, most significantly over the Lake Okeechobee region. Stronger storms could product frequent lightning and heavy downpours, officials said.

Localized flooding could also be concerning for South Florida residents with slow-moving storms, weather officials said. Palm beaches are at a moderate risk for rip currents.

Meanwhile, east central Florida is expecting on Monday excessive rainfall due to numerous to scattered showers and isolated to scattered lightning storms.

Residents may experience wind gusts up to 40-50 mph, locally heavy rainfall and frequent lightning strikes.

The predicted afternoon showers could generate 1-3 inches of rain in 60-90 minutes, with local amounts of up to 4 inches, weather officials said.

Low-lying areas and roadways could fall victim to minor flooding. Officials said this puts parts of Lake, Volusia, Orange, Seminole and northern Brevard counties at risk for excessive rainfall.

Furthermore, all central Florida Atlantic beaches are at a moderate risk for dangerous rip currents.

"Remember to swim near a lifeguard, and never swim alone," weather officials said in a hazardous weather outlook.
