Large Brush Fire Breaks Out In Tampa

A 50-acre brush fire broke out along West Fair Oaks in Tampa Friday evening at the former site of the Georgetown Apartment.

TAMPA, FL — Tampa Fire Rescue says a 50-acre brush fire that broke out on the site of the former Georgetown Apartments on West Fair Oaks Avenue had been brought under control just before 9 p.m. Friday. The blaze had spread to an estimated 50 acres, but was deemed "under control" with crews staying on scene to tackle any hot spots that might arise.

"Favorable winds helped the burn move toward the water and prevent damage to existing structures," an email from fire rescue's Jason Penny said.

About 30 firefighters responded to the scene near the corner of West Fair Oaks and West Shore Boulevard, Penny said. No injuries were reported.

The blaze, which broke out around 4:45 p.m. April 15, remains under investigation with its cause unknown as of Friday evening.

"This incident is another reminder that great care should be taken with regard to fires during Florida's dry season," Penny said. "The City of Tampa has a permanent ban on open fires."
