Leto High Teachers, Staff Protest Lack Of Raises

TAMPA, FL - About 60 teachers and staff walked out of Leto High School about 3:15 p.m. Monday to demonstrate how they will be "working the contract" during this week of school. Teachers are upset that the school district is not agreeing to a pay plan that calls for raises for teachers. Teachers say in "working the contract" they will not come in early to work, attend after-school events or take tests home to grade.
The school district says it doesn't have the money for teacher raises. The teachers union says about 4,000 teachers were supposed to get raises this year.
"Teachers get pushed to the back of the line, and we are tired of it," teacher Simo Prill told Bay News 9.

"Our teachers in Hillsborough County on average are paid higher than all of our contiguous counties," said Hillsborough School Superintendent Jeff Eakins. "Now, that doesn't mean that we should not do more -- we want to do more when dollars allow us to do more."
