Most Drunk Drivers Think They’re OK Behind The Wheel: Survey
Just in time for the Cinco de Mayo weekend, a survey sheds light on folks who think they're sober enough to drive.

TAMPA, FL — With Cinco de Mayo falling on a Friday this year, the revelry is likely to continue through the weekend. That’s why law enforcement agencies are teaming up for DUI Wolf Pack operations and AAA Auto Club South has announced its Tow 2 Go program will run through the weekend.
Just in time for the celebrations, the folks at CheapCarInsurance.net have released a survey that sheds light on drinking habits and driving behaviors. To create the analysis, the team at Cheap Car Insurance surveyed more than 1,000 Americans in a single day, March 13. A total of 57.6 percent of respondents were male with 42.4 percent female. The majority, 67.15 percent, identified as Millennials between the ages of 20 and 36. The next highest category of respondents, 22.62 percent, came from Generation X, those ages 37 to 52.

Survey takers found that “74 percent of people decided to drive drunk because they believe they are capable,” an email from Cheap Car Insurance said. More than 40 percent of drunk drivers are “driving to get more booze,” according to the survey.
The survey also shed light on friends who let friends drive drunk. Forty percent of respondents told survey takers they let friends drive drunk because they’ve done it in the past. More than one in 10 Millennials responded that they believed they could drink beyond the legal limit and still drive.

The survey was conducted to explore the reasons why people decide to get behind the wheel after drinking, Cheap Car Insurance officials explained. Citing information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the survey report pointed out that 28 people die each day in crashes in the U.S. that involve impaired drivers.
“That is one person every 53 minutes, 196 people a week, roughly 840 people a month, and possibly over 10,000 a year.”
