Mother, 5 Kids Rescued From Overturned Minivan By Hillsborough Deputy

A Hillsborough sheriff's sergeant is credited with saving the lives of a mother and her five children after their minivan overturned.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — A Hillsborough County sheriff's sergeant is being credited with saving the lives of a mother and her five children after the family's minivan flipped over, trapping the family inside.

The sheriff's office said Sgt. Donnie Rizer came across the crash site where some passersby were already on hand trying to free the distraught mother and children.

Rizer took over took charge and helped free the mother and four of the children, but one child remained missing.

After looking everywhere, Rizer eventually spotted two small fingers reaching through the sunroof. He removed his vest and equipment belt and crawled into the vehicle, rescuing the last child.

Sheriff Chad Chronister said Rizer's compassion was evident in the way he recovered the pacifier of one distressed child and cleaned it thoroughly before returning it.

"Sgt. Donnie Rizer's response was nothing short of extraordinary. His bravery, composure and genuine care for all involved are commendable," said Chronister. "His actions inspire us all."
