Murder Charge Filed In Drug Overdose Death: Tampa Police
The Tampa Police Department made its first murder arrest related to unlawful distribution of controlled substances, the agency said.
TAMPA, FL — A 48-year-old man was arrested in connection with a Feb. 8 drug overdose death, according to a Tampa Police Department news release.
Jeffrey Moyer was taken into custody at his home with help from the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force. He was charged with first-degree murder resulting from the unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and booked into Pasco County Jail.
Officers responded to the report of a medical emergency Feb. 8 on N. Forest Hills Drive, the sheriff’s office said.

They found the victim Kenny Martin, 29, unresponsive in the bathroom. Despite life-saving efforts, he died shortly after being brought to a nearby hospital.

Officers learned that Martin bought drugs from Moyer earlier that day.
Further testing confirmed the presence of methamphetamine and fentanyl in the baggies, HCSO said.
The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner determined these substances, supplied by Moyer, directly caused Martin's death.
"This is the first arrest Tampa Police have made on a murder charge resulting from the unlawful distribution of controlled substances," Chief Lee Bercaw said. "In Tampa, we have zero tolerance for drug dealing and we will pursue every avenue available in holding those responsible accountable to the fullest extent of the law."
