National Donut Day: Freebies In Tampa Bay Area

TAMPA, FL — Tampa Bay area residents with a passion for sweets can cash in on freebies courtesy of Friday’s observance of National Donut Day. Eateries like Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts are offering giveaways in honor of the celebration.

National Donut Day, always observed on the first Friday of June, was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The women, known as the "Doughnut Lassies," are also sometimes credited with popularizing doughnuts in America, the Salvation Army explains on its website.

To celebrate the day, Krispy Kreme is giving away one free doughnut, no purchase required, at participating locations in the Tampa Bay area and across the country.

“National Doughnut Day is one of our favorite days because we choose to celebrate each customer’s individually sweet experience with our brand,” Jackie Woodward, Krispy Kreme's chief marketing officer, said in a statement. “When everyone is able to participate by enjoying a Krispy Kreme doughnut of their choice for free, the experience is truly priceless.”

Dunkin’ Donuts is putting its own spin on the June 2 observance. Its fans can enjoy a free classic doughnut of their choice with a the purchase of any beverage on Friday. The offer is good throughout the day at participating locations.

“As a leader in the donut category for 67 years, we are always looking to delight our guests with classic favorites like Boston Kreme and new donut varieties like Vanilla Cake Batter and Dunkin’ Donuts Sprinkles Donuts,” Dunkin’ officials told Patch. “We see National Donut Day as the perfect opportunity to appreciate our fans and celebrate the many ways donuts make any moment in a busy day that much sweeter.”
