Powerstories Calls Out Book Banning at Inaugural FREEDOM TO READ Event

On Thursday, November 30 from 7-9 PM at Shuffle, Powerstories Theatre is hosting the free FREEDOM TO READ event in conjunction with the January Tampa Bay premiere of ALABAMA STORY at the Straz Center's Shimberg Theatre.

In a season themed "Critical Social Issues Take Center Stage," ALABAMA STORY by Kenneth Jones is inspired by true events in 1959 Montgomery, Alabama. The story centers on a state librarian who faces backlash for adding a children's book depicting a black and white rabbit's marriage to the library. As the Civil Rights movement brews, the book's perceived message of racial integration and equality sparks the outrage of a powerful and determined segregationist State Senator.

A contrasting story involves childhood friends—an African American man and a white privileged woman—reunited in adulthood, forming a boundary-breaking friendship. The play features political foes, star-crossed lovers, and a feisty children's author, all inhabiting a Deep South filled with humor, heartbreak, and hope. Set against segregation, these characters' lives intersect as they confront racism and book censorship and discover literature's transformative power. Get ready for a rollercoaster of political drama, star-crossed love, and a spirited librarian navigating the Deep South's mix of humor, heartbreak, and hope.

"The silver lining to losing our permanent home to developers last year is that we are enjoying getting out into the community more to perform on other stages. This event allows us to meet, gather, and celebrate each new play with our Powerstories family. These new events preceding each play invite conversations about the show's theme," says theatre founder Fran Powers. "With ALABAMA STORY, the focus is on the timely topic of book banning. As we watch history repeat in Florida and elsewhere, our event says we do not accept censorship and will continue celebrating the Freedom to Read."

Powerstories FREEDOM TO READ Event celebrates literature, artistic expression, and taking a stand against censorship. The one-night-only event promises an evening full of fun and inspiration, and guests get to meet the talented ensemble of Ron Nummi, Candace Del Rio, Theron (T.R.) Butler, Victor Carr, Lisa Negron, and Ashton Cote.

For poetry lovers – an original spoken word poetry performance will move you with its emotional and powerful words by local poet and playwright Kennedy Engasser.
