Here are the top five stories in Tampa today:

1. A 42-year-old Hillsborough County jail inmate is facing battery charges after being accused of choking a detention deputy with a pillow. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, just before 1 a.m. on June 7, inmate Bridgette Harvey told Deputy Lillian Jimenez that another inmate required her help. (Tampa Patch)

2. Roasted! is a new candy shop in Temple Terrace located at 11301 North 56th Street just near Tampa's Uptown featuring Halal-friendly treats and gummy treats. Gummy flavors include ice cream, pineapple, strawberry and more. (That's So Tampa)

3. There are up to 2,724 homes currently vacant and tied up in probate court, according to the Hillsborough Property Appraiser. These properties are worth over $546 million. Tampa City Councilman Orlando Gudes says these properties could be the answer to the affordable housing crisis. (Bay News 9)

4. AC Hotel Clearwater Beach officially opened June 15, bringing the popular brand to Florida's west coast. Guests at the 144-room AC Hotel Clearwater Beach can enjoy Soirée, a Mediterranean-themed rooftop gathering space where guests can enjoy nightly libations and food from the 10th floor. 5. "Cigar City Mafia" by Scott Deitche is a book that explores the city of Tampa's history with mafia organizations, first published 20 years ago. The passion for this history started when he saw the 1990 mob movie, "Goodfellas." Deitche also leads Mafia Tours of Ybor City for a living. (Fox 13)

  • TiECON, the local annual event recognizing entrepreneurs in Tampa Bay, is returning as an in-person event and will have several prolific speakers. It will feature a "Legacy: The Next Generation" theme at the Tampa River Center, at Julian B Lane Park in downtown Tampa. (St. Pete Catalyst)
  • Mediterranean chain Cava is coming to South Tampa. They acquired Zoe's Kitchen in late 2018 and will convert the location over to the concept. (Subscription: Tampa Bay Business Journal)
