See Future Tampa International Airport

Social media is abuzz with plans for TIA, including a new 1.3 mile people mover and a bigger main terminal.

The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority on Thursday approved a $2.5 billion master plan for improvements to Tampa International Airport.

Phased-in improvements to the airport call for a 1.3 mile people mover from the main terminal to a centralized rental car facility.

The new rental car facility will be one of the first additions. It will be built "by the economy parking garage and airport post office. A new automated people mover would be built to link passengers to the main terminal and the new rental facility two miles away," according to Tampabay.com.

The 20-year master plan calls for three phases of construction, according to the Tampa Bay Business Journal.

"Modifications to the main terminal would create 50,300 square feet of new space, much of it on the third floor transfer level," the Journal reports.
