Selmon Expressway Extension Design Finally Chosen (Video)
The Tampa Hillsborough County Expressway Authority announced the decision for the extension, which should be built by late 2020.

TAMPA, FL — With long, sleek supports and flowing curves, the "Estuary" design for the new extension of the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway will grace the Tampa Bay region by the end of 2020, if all goes as planned.
The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority announced the final decision on the design Monday after results of a public opinion poll showed a decisive preference.
Estuary's competitor — the "Vivid" design — won only 26 percent of the 1,805-vote poll. The winning design garnered a whopping 76 percent of the vote.

"We received nearly two thousand votes from members of the community participating in the public opinion poll and the overwhelming choice was Estuary," said Joe Waggoner, CEO of the authority.
He added: "While both pier designs were outstanding options, THEA is confident the ESTUARY design will not only enhance the Selmon Extension project but will serve as a new landmark for the Tampa Bay region."

The authority solicited public input after it revealed the two designs on Oct. 9. It sent post cards about the two designs to the surrounding area and let residents vote by phone.
The extension will cover a 1.9 mile stretch above Grandy boulevard.
