Here are the top five stories in Tampa today:

1. An airplane flying from Tampa to Atlanta caught fire Sunday after its landing gear burst into flames, according to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The airport posted online that the brakes on Spirit Airlines flight 383 from Tampa ignited at 9:25 a.m. (WFLA)

2. Raydiant Health Care of Brandon is the latest home to lose its federal benefits because of poor patient care. About 87 elderly residents were forced to find new housing, much to their dismay, after the abrupt change. Termination of Medicare and Medicaid is said to be a "last resort" for the government. (Subscription: Tampa Bay Times)

3. The SS American Victory ship is back in downtown Tampa's waters after scheduled renovations. The ship has graced Tampa's waters for about 20 years and has a museum inside. It was originally built in 1945 during World War II. (Fox 13)

4. A St. Petersburg man was charged with raping a 14-year-old family member, according to an arrest report. Wiliams Twiner, 48, was arrested by the St. Petersburg Police Department early Saturday morning and faces two sex crime charges. (WFLA)

5. Tampa Crossroads has been awarded a three-year CARF accreditation, the highest possible level of accreditation. CARF stands for Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. Their programs include a Veterans Assistance Center, Behavioral Wellness Center, Rapid Rehousing and more. (Tampa Patch)

  • The Florida Penguin Back to School Extravaganza is giving away free backpacks and school supplies with events at three locations in Pinellas, Hillsborough & Pasco County. The Back-to-School events start on July 30th and include 250 backpacks sponsored by Florida Penguin Productions at each location and those interested can pre-register online. (Tampa Bay Newswire)
