As the victims’ car entered the roadway to cross N. Dale Mabry Highway near W. South Avenue, Robaina’s car hit them from the inside lane, police said.

After being redirected, Robaina’s car came to a stop in the northbound lanes of N. Dale Mabry Highway.

The other vehicle that was racing Robaina is believed to be a dark-colored vehicle, police said.

Moments before the crash, the dark-colored vehicle narrowly missed the victims’ car and continued to travel southbound on N. Dale Mabry Highway. That vehicle did not stop or return to the scene.

There were no passengers with Robaina at the time of the crash and he was uninjured.

He was taken into custody and brought to Orient Road Jail, where he was charged with one felony count of vehicular homicide and one misdemeanor count of unlawful racing on a highway.

Investigators are working to identify the driver of the dark-colored vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to call the Tampa Police non-emergency number at 813-231-6130 or submit an anonymous tip via Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 800-873-TIPS (8477) or via Tip411.
