PLANT CITY, FL — Two Plant City High School students were arrested Wednesday after one stole a loaded gun from another’s car parked on campus, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Though deputies named the suspects, it’s Patch policy not to name minors accused of a crime unless they’ve been charged as an adult. It’s unknown whether they were charged as a juvenile or an adult.

A 17-year-old student reported Wednesday around 12:30 p.m. that his car had been burglarized in the school parking lot, the sheriff’s office said.

School surveillance video confirmed the burglary and during their investigation, deputies learned that a loaded gun was stolen from the car.

The boy admitted his gun was inside the car when he got to school that morning, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives spoke with another student, also 17, who admitted to burglarizing the car and stealing the gun, which they found in his backpack.

The student whose car was burglarized was charged with one count of possession of a weapon on school property and one count of minor in possession of a firearm.

The student who burglarized the car was charged with one count of minor in possession of a firearm, one count of possession of a weapon on school property, one count of grand theft firearm and one count of armed burglary of a conveyance.

“There is never a circumstance where a weapon should be on a school campus, let alone in the hands of a student. School safety is paramount, and we will continue working with our school partners to ensure that anyone who brings a firearm to school is held fully accountable,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “I am grateful for the quick actions of our deputies and school staff."
