Tampa Man Accused Of Stealing Cybertruck During Test Drive: Report

A Tampa man was arrested after authorities alleged he stole a Tesla Cybertruck during a test drive and returned to the dealership.

TAMPA, FL — A man accused of stealing a Tesla Cybertruck during a test drive, then returning to the dealership, over the weekend has been arrested, Fox 13 reported.

The man was identified in the report as Dexter Smithen, of Tampa. Hillsborough County Jail records showed Smithen was arrested Tuesday on several charges, including grand theft auto.

Smithen was accused of arriving on March 26 at a Tesla dealership, where he test drove a Cybertruck Cyberbeast, Fox 13 reported, citing a criminal affidavit. He did not return to the dealership at the agreed upon time, the news outlet reported.

Geolocation tracking aided the Tesla sales team in locating the vehicle on Monday, and the team was able to recover the Tesla in a store parking lot, Fox 13 reported.

Smith returned to the dealership on Tuesday to retrieve his belongings, the news outlet reported.

During a search, authorities found five bank cards and credit cards on his person registered to other people, Fox 13 reported.

Smith was arrested on charges of grand theft $100,000 or more, unlawful possession of personal identification of another (five or more) and three counts of unlawful possession of a stolen credit or debit card, jail records showed Thursday.
