Tampa Officer Shoots At Man Appearing To Draw Gun From Waistband

At 11:20 p.m. on April 12, officers responded to the Roadway Inn after two people got into a fight and one pulled out a gun.

TAMPA, FL — Tampa police are investigating an officer-involved incident at the Roadway Inn, 2207 E Busch Blvd., Tampa.

At 11:20 p.m. on April 12, officers responded to the Roadway Inn after two people got into a fight and one pulled out a gun.

Shortly after their arrival, police found a man who matched the description of the person with the gun and ordered him to come forward. However, police said the man hid behind a tree and made a motion with his hand toward his waistband.

In fear for his life, one of the officers fired one shot toward the man, who was injured. The man fled the area followed by both a K-9 and aviation unit and was apprehended after a brief chase.

The man has been identified as DeAngelo Deshawn Marino, 26. He faces charges of carrying a concealed firearm and resisting arrest without violence.

He previously faced charges of battery and grand theft, among others. Marino also had a warrant issued for his arrest for failure to appear in court for resisting arrest.

Marino's gun was found near the scene of the shooting outside the Roadway Inn.

The officer who shot Marino has no previous incidents of use of force and has been employed by the Tampa police since 2016. His name is being withheld due to the active investigation.

"At the end of the day, I am grateful that nobody was injured as a result of this incident," said Interim Police Chief Lee Bercaw. "This is just another example of the dangers officers face every day on the job in their mission to protect our community. Per standard protocol, the involved officer is placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues."
