Tampa police said they opened fire on a man who allegedly pointed a gun at police officers during a Thanksgiving confrontation.

TAMPA, FL — Tampa police said they opened fire on a man who allegedly pointed a gun at police officers during a Thanksgiving confrontation.
The man, identified as 30-year-old Derrick Everett, later died at St. Joseph's Hospital, according to Tampa police on Friday.
The incident happened at 1:38 p.m. Thanksgiving afternoon in the 100 block of E. Flora Street, police said. Officers had been called to the neighborhood after one person reported hearing gunshots and another person reported seeing a man with a gun.

"Officers arrived on scene, attempting to locate the suspect. They found the adult male suspect in a backyard shed, where he was ordered to show his hands," Tampa police said. "The male subject turned at the officers and pointed a gun in their direction. The officers fired their weapons, hitting the suspect and removing the threat."
The officers involved in the shooting were identified as 19-year-veteran Sgt. Felicia Pecora and five-year-veteran Officer Hope Dauphin.

"Sgt Pecora orders Everett to drop the gun. Everett does not comply," Tampa police explained. "Everett then points the gun at the female, causing Sgt. Pecora to fire at Everett in defense of the female."
Police said Everett then allegedly pointed his gun at Pecora as she continued to fire.
"Officer Dauphin also fires at Everett in defense of Sgt. Pecora," Tampa police said.
The officers applied first aid until medical personnel arrived on scene and took Everett to St. Joseph's Hospital.
