Two years ago today, the Tampa Police Department lost two of its own.

Officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis were gunned down June 29, 2010, during a routine traffic stop. The slayings shocked residents of the Tampa Bay area, with thousands lining the streets for a funeral procession and gathering at a memorial service. Kocab and Curtis, both 31, were .

The officers' widows are suing the Jacksonville Sheriff, The Associated Press reported this week, over what they say was negligence in the form of bad warrants that led Kocab and Curtis to pull over the alleged shooter, Dontae Morris.

TPD posted a memorial photo of the two officers Friday for the two-year memorial on its Facebook page, along with a post that read "Two years ago today, the Tampa Police Department lost two of the best officers. Jeff and Dave, you will never be forgotten."

The posting prompted an outpouring of emotion from Facebook fans.

"It is a sad world we live in today where people have no respect for Law Enforcement," wrote Marissa Pease. "My grandfather was a Officer for over 30 years then national trustee of FOP so I grew up around it. My husband is getting ready to enter academy and I can only hope that people learn to have the respect the used to for Officers."

"Prayers for the men and women of the TPD today and always," posted Jason Lindemann. "We love you all and are so blessed to be a part of the TPD family. Stay safe."
