2 Sewage Facilities Turned Off In St. Pete During Hurricane Milton

The Northeast Sewer Treatment Plant and the Southwest Sewer Treatment Plant were shut down Wednesday night, St. Petersburg officials said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Two sewage treatment plants were shut down Wednesday night as Hurricane Milton approached Florida’s west coast, St. Petersburg city officials said in a news release.

The city shut off the power at the Northeast Sewer Treatment Plant (1160 62nd Ave. NE) and the Southwest Sewer Treatment Plant (3800 54th Ave. S) at 7 p.m.

Those affected are encouraged to limit their water usage by avoiding taking showers, doing laundry or washing dishes. Toilets should be flushed only as necessary as they might not drain, officials said.

Drinking water hasn’t been affected. Running water remains available for drinking and cooking.

The decision to shut down the sewage facilities was made “to protect employees and the treatment plants from potential storm surge from Hurricane Milton,” officials said.

After the storm, it could take two days or more to resume wastewater operations after city crews inspect the facilities and make any necessary repairs.
