Attempted Rapist Caught In Act By Sergeant, Police Say

Breaking: A Tampa man, 26, faces criminals charges after St. Petersburg Police say he was caught trying to rape a 61-year-old woman.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A St. Petersburg Police sergeant out on routine patrol is getting the credit for stopping an accused attempted rapist in the act Tuesday night.

According to the agency, the sergeant, who is not being named, was patrolling in the 500 block of 16th Street North around 10 p.m. Sept. 26 when he came across an attack in progress. Snipes, an email from the police department said, threatened the woman with a knife and forced her into an alley. Once there, he attempted to sexually assault her, the email added.

Snipes was charged with sexual battery with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.

Snipes, whose last known address was in Tampa, was being held without bond in the Pinellas County Jail Wednesday, according to records.
