Police: Carjacking Did Not Happen

Update, 4:30 p.m.: St. Petersburg police now say that 51-year-old Clinton Hattaway was not the victim of a carjacking. 

Homicide detectives have now advised that based on accounts they have received regarding last night's homicide, it does not appear that Hattaway was the victim of a carjacking.

Detectives said they now believe that Hattaway had gone to the area of 22 Avenue South and 47 Street in his pick-up truck to meet someone he knew.

While there, police said he became involved in an altercation with another individual that resulted in Hattaway receiving the blunt force injuries which lead to his death.

After the altercation, police believe that a third party then got into Hattaway's truck and drove it to the area of 4601 22 Avenue South where it was abandoned.

Earlier: Carjacking victim Clinton Hattaway died this morning at from blunt force trauma, according to St. Petersburg police.

Police say that the 51-year-old Gulfport man was severely beaten during a carjacking Sunday. He had upper body injuries.

Hattaway was found at about 6:30 p.m. in the area of the 2200 block of 47th St. S. Police responded to a call about a man lying in the roadway.

According to police, Hattaway's 1999 Chevy pickup was carjacked and later found at 4601 22nd Ave S.

Homicide detectives said that they are working on several promising leads  and hope to share additional details.
