Driver In Fatal St. Pete Crash Charged With Third DUI: Police

A woman was killed and multiple people were injured in the September crash, according to police.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A man suspected of driving under the influence is facing multiple charges in connection with a fatal car crash in St. Petersburg, according to police.

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, around 6:30 p.m., police said 41-year-old Brett McClelland was driving a Subaru Outback westbound in the 7800 block of 38th Avenue North when he swerved into oncoming traffic.

According to police, McClelland struck an eastbound black Toyota sedan in a head-on collision. The Toyota driver was seriously injured, and his passenger, 89-year-old Angel Shihate, died of her injuries at the hospital.

McClelland was also treated for injuries and found to be under the influence, police said. He was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, felony driving under the influence (third offense) and other counts.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
