Fatal Hit-And-Run Suspect Killed Woman, 91, In FL Publix Parking Lot, Cops Say

An 85-year-old man was arrested in a fatal hit-and-run crash in a Publix parking lot, St. Petersburg police said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — An 85-year-old St. Petersburg man accused of a fatal hit-and-run crash in the parking lot of a Publix grocery store in St. Petersburg on Friday afternoon has been arrested, authorities said.

Darrell Briggs was charged with leaving the scene of a crash causing death, St. Petersburg police said in a news release.

He hit the victim, 91-year-old Mary Broughton, in the parking lot at 200 37th Ave. N. just before 5 p.m., investigators said.

She was brought to a local hospital, where she died of her injuries.

Briggs left the scene and drove to his home at a nearby apartment complex, police said.

He told police that he knew he ran “something” over, but still went home without stopping, WFLA reported.
