Hit-and-Run, Suspicious Death Unrelated

Investigating a hit-and-run crash where two underage drivers fled on foot, police discover a man unconscious nearby. He later died.

St. Petersburg Police have determined that a hit-and-run accident and the discovery of a body in a front yard nearby are not related.

Police responded to a report of a hit-and-run Sunday at 3621 Sunfish Dr. The accident involved two underage drivers, 12 and 14 years old. 

A short time later, police discovered a man lying in the front yard of 3632 Sea Robin Dr. SE, in the same neighborhood.

According to police, it appears that the two boys had taken their sister's car out for a joyride and fled on foot, after hitting a pole. Charges are pending.

The man found unconscious on Sea Robin Dr SE and who was later pronounced dead at has been identified as Jeremy Mayers, 20, of 921 64th Ave. S.

Police said it is unclear how Mayers arrived on Sea Robin Drive SE and his cause of death is still under investigation, but a preliminary medical exanimation did not reveal any trauma to his body that might suggest he was hit by a car. There was not known affiliation to the two boys and the man who later died.

Mayers' death is being investigated by homicide detectives and is currently classified as suspicious.
