FLORIDA — Floridians in several counties have been ordered to evacuate their homes ahead of Hurricane Milton, which is expected to make landfall in the Tampa Bay area as an "extremely dangerous" storm.

Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 51 of Florida's 67 counties over the weekend as Milton strengthened in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm is expected to move east through the gulf before likely making landfall on Florida's west-central coast on Wednesday night.

Hurricane and storm surge warnings are in effect for much of the coast. Forecasters said some areas could see "devastating storm surge" up to 23 feet, depending on where the storm makes landfall.

Most of the Tampa Bay region is forecast to see 10 to 15 feet of storm surge, double the amount seen when Hurricane Helene hit the state two weeks ago.

"This is an extremely life-threatening situation, and you should evacuate today if ordered by local officials," National Hurricane Center forecasters said Tuesday. "There will likely not be enough time to wait to leave on Wednesday."
