Poll: Should Donald Trump Stay or Go?

As cries go out for Republican Donald Trump to drop out of the presidential race, Patch wants to hear Tampa Bay's take on the topic.

TAMPA BAY, FL — Republican Donald Trump has had a rough couple of weeks on the campaign trail. So rough, in fact, a new poll shows that nearly 20 percent of Republicans would like to see him drop out of the race.

Among the registered Republicans who responded to the Reuters/Ipsos poll, 19 percent said the New York businessman should get out of the race for the White House. The poll, released early Wednesday, did find that some 70 percent of Republicans would like to see Trump stick it out. Ten percent answered that they “don’t know” what the outspoken and often controversial candidate should do. Among the broader electorate, 44 percent of registered voters say they want Trump to leave the race.

A Quinnipiac University Poll of the swing states released Tuesday showed that Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton had closed Trump’s lead in the Sunshine State. That poll had the two running neck-in-neck with Clinton supported by an estimated 46 percent of Florida voters polled and Trump by 45 percent.

The Reuters poll was conducted as Trump suffered attacks following his dispute with the Muslim family of a fallen American soldier. It, however, was released after Trump sparked outrage Tuesday afternoon when he said Clinton would be able to appoint liberal justices to the Supreme Court if she wins the White House — and that gun rights activists could stop her.

"Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish, the Second Amendment," he said. "By the way, and if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know. But I'll tell you what, that will be a horrible day."
