Tropical Storm Debby brought heavy rains, flooding, gusty winds and reports of tornadoes to much of the Florida peninsula.

FLORIDA — After strengthening into a hurricane overnight, Debby was downgraded to a tropical storm late Monday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. update.
Debby made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane Monday around 7 a.m. in Florida’s Big Bend area.
Before that, as the storm moved north along the coast, it brought heavy rains, flooding, gusty winds and reports of tornadoes to the state's peninsula.

A 13-year-old boy was crushed to death around 8 a.m. after a tree fell on a mobile home he was inside, according to a Levy County Department of Public Safety news release. There were no other injuries.


A car was fully submerged Monday near Country Chase Boulevard and Memorial Highway, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Divers recovered the body of a truck driver who drove into the Tampa Bypass Canal on Interstate 75 early Monday morning, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release. The driver, a 64-year-old Mississippi man, lost control of his 18-wheel tractor-trailer truck on the wet roadway near milepost 263 around 2:30 a.m.
