Small FL Grocery Chain Specializing In Local Products Expands In FL
A Tampa-based small grocery chain that specializes in local, high-end and imported products expanded into St. Petersburg.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A Tampa-based small grocery chain has expanded into St. Petersburg’s Grand Central District.
Duckweed Urban Grocery opened its doors Friday morning at 1670 Central Ave. on the ground floor of the Tru by Hilton hotel.
The St. Pete location is Duckweed’s sixth grocery store, according to its website. All other locations are in Tampa.

The new space offers “an interesting mix” of grocery items for sale, Duckweed’s ownership team told Patch.
“I’m excited for the nearby residents. I’ve been saying it’s a place for nearby residents to come if you need a spice for dinner or you forgot something on your grocery list and you don’t want to make a big grocery run,” they said.

The owners added, “We also have a unique opportunity being under the hotel. So, we’ve had a couple of guests come in and grab dental floss, you know? Or maybe they want a little snack.”
Products include both brand-name and hard-to-find items, high-end and imported goods, beer and wine, THC beverages, and local brands, as well as vegan, keto, and gluten-free options.

Compared to Duckweed’s other locations, the St. Petersburg store also offers more space and natural light, the owners said.
“The environment here is a little bit lighter and more playful than the others. I mean, they’re all very successful, but we just wanted to bring a little fun to it. We just wanted to bring some St. Pete love in here,” they said.
There’s room for growth at the shop as they get used to their new digs. They’re already considering adding a section with local art and gifts.
“We’re willing to try new things and look for things that people maybe can’t find,” they said. “We’re just learning and having fun with it. Everybody’s been so sweet. We’re just really open to suggestions from all of our customers that come in.”
