St. Pete Cyclist Fatally Struck By Suspected Drunk Driver

A 36-year-old Texas man is facing charges in connection with the crash, police said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A St. Petersburg man died early Saturday morning when he was struck by a truck while riding an electric bicycle.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 36-year-old Robert Chase Self from Conroe, Texas, was driving a Chevy Silverado eastbound on Gandy Boulevard around 3 a.m. when the collision occurred.

Police said when he reached the intersection with 4th Street North, he overtook and collided with the 43-year-old cyclist.

The cyclist was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Self was arrested for driving under the influence and refused a breath test, police said.
