Student Brought Gun To High School: St. Pete Police

Thanks to a tip, a gun was found in the backpack of a 10th-grade student at Gibbs High School on Monday, St. Petersburg police said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A 10th-grader was arrested after bringing a gun to Gibbs High School Monday, according to a St. Petersburg Police Department news release.

A tip to the school led to the gun being found in the 16-year-old boy’s backpack.

The teen didn’t make any threats against the school or anyone else, the sheriff’s office.

He was charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

“The St. Petersburg Police Department makes the safety of students a top priority and any weapon on campus, or other threat to school safety, will be thoroughly investigated,” the agency said. “This serves as a reminder to students that the police department takes these matters very seriously and the consequences could be severe.”
