ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Many workers and students in St. Petersburg get to enjoy a long weekend for Presidents Day, which is honored Monday.

After the death of George Washington in 1799, his birthday, Feb. 22, was unofficially celebrated as a day of remembrance called Washington Day, according to National Today. It became an official holiday during the late 1870s when Steven Wallace Dorsey proposed that Washington's birthday become a national federal holiday. It was signed into law in 1879, and joined the four existing bank holidays that were previously approved in 1870.

In 1896, St. Petersburg started celebrating Washington's birthday annually with the George Washington Day's Birthday Celebration Parade, and it eventually became known as the Festival of States Parade in 1921, according to Florida Memory.
