📰 News we're reading

1. Construction underway on 158-unit affordable housing complex in Tallahassee (wctv.tv) — A 158-unit affordable housing complex is rising at Lake Bradford Road and Kissimmee Street, aimed at Tallahassee residents earning up to 80% of area median income. Thirty-nine units will be reserved for people exiting or at risk of homelessness, with the city investing over $1 million and completion expected by summer 2026.

2. City of Tallahassee land with graves of formerly enslaved sold to country club for over $1M (wctv.tv) — Tallahassee’s City Commission has voted 3-2 to sell the city-owned Capital City Country Club property, which includes a plantation cemetery with unmarked graves of formerly enslaved people, for just over $1 million. Supporters say the sale will fund a long-delayed memorial and other services, while opponents question the timing of the memorial work and argue the land should remain under public control.

3. Burn ban ends in Leon County with rain easing dry spell (tallahassee.com) — Leon County has lifted its burn ban as recent rains eased the extreme dry spell around Tallahassee, allowing residents to resume outdoor burning. County leaders thank neighbors for cooperating during the restriction and urge everyone to keep practicing careful fire safety and follow state laws as they fire up backyard pits or other burns.

4. Head Start to expand in Leon County in 2026 (wtxl.com) — Starting January 2026, Leon County Schools will open new Head Start classrooms for 3-year-olds at several Tallahassee-area elementary campuses, including Wesson, Pineview, Hartsfield and Sable Palm. District leaders say earlier instruction in neighborhood Title I schools will help children master classroom routines, boost kindergarten readiness, and improve long-term academic performance for families across Leon County.

5. Gadsden County family backs bill to crack down on illegal internet cafés (wtxl.com) — From Tallahassee, a Gadsden County family is helping drive a new bill that would toughen penalties on illegal internet cafés after security guard Lewis Butler was killed at a Havana business. Their $779 million wrongful-death verdict is fueling Senator Michele Rayner’s proposed Lewis Butler Act, which would upgrade running illegal gambling operations from a misdemeanor to a felony.
