U.S. 19, Tarpon Avenue All Clear After Downed Powerline

Motorists were being asked to avoid a few Tarpon Springs roads Saturday afternoon.

TARPON SPRING, FL — Update 7:57 p.m. Oct. 15: The Tarpon Springs Police Department reports that all lanes of Tarpon Avenue and U.S. 19 are now clear.

Earlier: The Tarpon Springs Police Department is asking motorists to steer clear of Tarpon Avenue and portions of U.S. 19 Saturday afternoon following an incident involving a power pole and transformers.

According to the agency, the pole holds high voltage lines. Transformers in the area have also blown. Police did not say what caused the damage, but noted that Duke Energy is on the scene, making repairs.

In the meantime, traffic in the area is being detoured, the agency wrote in an email to media.

“Currently, southbound U.S. 19 is open, northbound U.S. 19 has one open lane of traffic, vehicles heading east on Tarpon Avenue (coming from west of U.S.19) can head either north or south on U.S. 19.,” the 1:55 p.m. Oct. 15 email said. “Vehicles heading west on Tarpon Avenue from the East Lake area (east of U.S. 19) are being redirected.”

It is unclear how long the detours will remain in place.
