'Gold-Plated' Shovels Break Ground on Water Treatment Plant

Tarpon officials break ground on a $35 million project that will enable the city to generate its own drinking water. This photo was tweeted by the Southwest Florida Water Management District.

The shovels very well could have been gold-plated for the $35 million water treatment plant project that finally got off the ground in Tarpon Tuesday.

On Tuesday, March 26, officials broke ground on a project that has been delayed for a decade. But residents and officials have never stopped aiming for the goal to have Tarpon Springs produce its own drinking water. Currently, Tarpon buys its water from Pinellas County.

The reverse osmosis plant is expected to come on line in early 2015. It is expected to produce 5 millions gallons per day, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
