Is Tarpon Springs Rain Repellent?

Has anyone noticed while other parts of Pinellas are getting slammed with funnel clouds and heavy rain, Tarpon Springs seems to stay calm and dry?

Last week's funnel cloud invasion in south Pinellas was a distant thought for Tarponites as folks enjoyed sunny skies. The only indication of foul weather in the area came from the television or a dark sky in the distance.

So, what is it about Tarpon Springs that seems to keep it dry during wet weather? And why does a weather radar look like we are getting bombarded, but the conditions outside are calm?

Tarpon Springs Patch checked in with the National Weather Service in Ruskin to find out.

Meteoroligst Andrew McKaughan said there is no scientific explanation as to why storms have seemed to dodge Tarpon Springs recently.

"The storms we've been having recently are pretty widespread," McKaughan told Patch. "But there are some areas that are seeing much more rain than others and that's just the way the weather works sometimes."

In 2012 Tarpon Springs received some rain and wind gusts during Tropical Storm Isaac while other parts of Pinellas endured more serious conditions

More recently, the lack of Tropical Storm Andrea's presence left Tarponites pursuing their daily routines while south Pinellas saw a tornado touch down.

"It's just luck of the draw, if you will," McKaughan said.
