Sister Cities Program Breeds Culture, Education
The Tarpon Springs committee is dedicated to forming international relationships that will bring notoriety to the area and have a positive influence on education.

For many, being in Tarpon Springs is a way to visit Greece without ever leaving town. The Sister Cities Committee of Tarpon Springs unites the local community with four Greek towns, half-way across the globe.
The Sister Cities are located in:
- Kaylmnos, Greece
- Symi, Greece
- Halki, Greece
- Larnaca, Cyprus
In 2003, the Sister Cities program was founded as a non-profit organization. Since inception, the group has contributed multiple educational opportunities in Tarpon Springs. A partnership with the American Foundation for Greek Language and Culture brought forth the Hellenic Studies program at St. Petersburg College in Tarpon Springs. An exhibit at the Heritage Museum and City Hall showcases costumes and artifacts for folks to enjoy.

Out of support for the organization, Mayor of Tarpon Springs David Archie writes that the program " will strengthen our cultural connection, as well as explore economic development opportunities" on the Sister Cities website.
Chris Alahouzos is the President of the Sister Cities Committee and the Vice Mayor of Tarpon Springs. He believes that the advancement of the program is vital for the economy in Tarpon. When more alliances are formed internationally, the potential for economic development in Tarpon Springs is multiplied.

"It benefits us because we can learn from them," Alahouzos explained. "It is very important."
Alahouzos is somewhat of an ambassador for the area and has even traveled to Rhodes, Greece to discuss issues with dignitaries from the Dodecanese islands.
Through the Sister Cities program a strip along the harbor in Kalymnos was named Tarpon Springs Boulevard. The street is similar to Dodecanese Boulevard in Tarpon Springs.
Members of the community can get involved by volunteering their time to the Sister Cities program. Those interested are encouraged to visit the website or print out a membership application, fill it out and mail it to:
