50-Pound Baby Born at Busch Gardens

The new eland calf belongs to the largest species of antelope.

Move over, —there's a new baby at .

The amusement park welcomed the latest addition to its family Monday—a 50-pound female eland.

Elands are the largest of the antelope species, and the baby will grow to be around 1,000 pounds, according to Busch Gardens spokesperson Jill Revelle. Once fully-grown, elands can jump eight to 10 feet straight up in the air from a standing position. They have thick, spiral horns that are three to four feet long.

Babies aren't born with horns though because giving birth is painful enough. The newborn's full set will grow in after about two years, Revelle said.

Busch Gardens’ Serengeti Plain now has 11 elands. The new calf is the second born this season. The other female calf, which was born on July 17, is already twice the size of the newborn.

Guests can see the new eland and all of the other animals on the 65-acre free-roaming Serengeti Plain via the park’s train or by booking a Serengeti Safari experience. For more information, call 1-888-800-5447.
