City Can't Grow Anything in Roundabout, Garden Club Takes Over

If you’ve driven in the area of the Temple Terrace Golf & Country Club or Florida College this month, you might have noticed the roundabout at Inverness, Woodmont and Glen Arven avenues taking on a new look.

That’s because members of the Temple Terrace Garden Club have adopted the patch of land and are planting a garden there.

“The City of Temple Terrace, they’ve tried and tried to plant this area, and they can’t get anything to survive,” said Patty Cartwright, chairwoman of the project. “So, they have contacted the Garden Club to get involved.”

The club started working in the roundabout on May 2, and members are creating four planting zones. The zones are divided by the four roadways that lead into the roundabout and will blend together.

Busch Gardens has donated all the compost that the club will mix with the soil.

“It’s going to be butterfly-friendly, bird-friendly and bee-friendly,” Cartwright said of the garden. “That’s what the club is all about—we’re a garden club and we want to show our efforts and knowledge here and hopefully get other people interested in growing these things.”

Club members expect to complete the project by the end of May, Cartwright said. After that, they’ll visit the garden once a month to maintain the plants.

“Pretty soon, it’s going to be something we hope that everybody appreciates and enjoys,” Cartwright said.
