Fire at University Club Apartments Destroys Five Units

No one was injured in the blaze.

Five of the eight units at 12702 University Club Drive in the are destroyed and there others have sustained serious fire and water damage after a two-alarm fire broke out early Thursday morning.

No injuries were reported, according to Ray Yeakley, public information officer for Hillsborough Fire Rescue.

The fire started in a first-floor apartment building, Yeakley said. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Tampa Fire Rescue and responded to the scene where heavy smoke and flames could be seen from a distance. The first unit on scene reported heavy flames through the roof a two-story apartment building.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within two hours. All units are still on scene while some flare-ups continue and hot spots are extinguished, Yeakley said.

Exposed buildings on three sides sustained minor damage to the exterior, Yeakley said. The American Red Cross has been requested to assist displaced residents.

The investigation into the cause of the fire will start as soon as the scene is secure, he said.
