Firefighters Host Advanced Life Support Competition

More than 60 fire professionals from throughout Florida competed Aug. 30-31 in Temple Terrace.

Temple Terrace Professional Firefighters (Local 3582) partnered with the city to host an Advanced Life Support Competition Aug. 30-31, which drew firefighters and paramedics from throughout Florida.

According to a press release from Mike Dunn, the city’s public information officer, firefighters and paramedics competed in various fire-rescue scenarios involving multiple “patients.” They were graded on how well they responded and performed in seven mock scenarios, including lightning strikes, hunting accidents, an airplane crash, a drowning and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Fifteen fire departments from throughout the state, representing more than 60 fire professionals, competed. Boca Raton Fire Rescue (Team A) took first place, Margate Fire Department took second place, and Boca Raton Fire Rescue (Team B) took third place. The was not eligible to participate because it was involved in hosting the activities, Dunn said.

“This was one of most challenging competitions our department has hosted,” said in the press release. “On the second day, we had six scenarios going on simultaneously. Each location had judges, actors and various props to make the scenes as realistic as possible.”

“Our competition has become well known throughout the state of Florida,” Chapman added. “This year we had teams on a waiting list to participate. I believe this is a direct result of the commitment to excellence our department showed in the planning and execution of this competition. Because of the combined effort of our personnel, we provided an extraordinary educational opportunity.”
