MOSI Summer Games Brings Together Sports, Science
Hands-on exhibits featuring the science behind sports coincides with the Summer Olympics in Rio.
Tampa, FL – Tampa Bay area residents won’t have to go far to have a taste of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Instead of taking a trip to Rio, residents can travel to MOSI to get a taste of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad.
MOSI is getting into the sporting spirit of Rio and inviting guest to take on indoor versions of their favorite events every day for a limited time starting July 16 in the MOSI Summer Games. The MOSI Summer Games will feature 11 events, such as indoor archery, tests of speed and reaction time, and brain exercises.
During the event’s run, MOSI will transform into the Olympicene Village. (Olympicene, pronounced “olympi-seen,” is a real molecule that resembles the Olympics’ five-ring logo.) As guests explore the 450 hands-on exhibits in the museum, there will be added extras that show visitors the science behind the sports and spectacle of the actual Summer Games in Rio.

Some of the extra exhibits will explore:
- Why does a soccer shot “bend” into the back of the net?
- What sport uses 3D-printed helmets to get the perfect fit?
- How will driverless cars like the one that takes guests on rides at MOSI transform the Summer Games of the future?
“We’re inviting families to come join ‘Team MOSI’ as we celebrate the Summer Games and challenge families to work together and experience MOSI like never before,” said MOSI President and CEO Molly Demeulenaere. “You’ll need to work together to go for the gold – or because this is MOSI – to go for the californium.”

Californium is the most valuable metal on earth, worth 600,000 times more than gold. Children who complete a MOSI Mission to challenge their bodies and minds through several events will receive a medal made of simulated californium.
Also new this summer for the museum, visitors can pay for a day and get the rest of the year free with MOSI’s Discovery Passport. Guests who purchase regularly priced MOSI general admission will receive a new Discovery Passport, giving them free unlimited admission through the end of 2016.
