Once-Homeless Veteran Among Those Moving Into Affordable Homes
Habitat for Humanity Hillsborough County is marking the completion of its Silvio Palms neighborhood in Temple Terrace on Feb. 16.

TEMPLE TERRACE, FL β Habitat for Humanity Hillsborough County is marking the completion of its Silvio Palms neighborhood on Thursday, Feb. 16, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening of a new neighborhood park.
Located in Temple Terrace, work began on the 12 affordable, single-family homes in spring 2022 for residents who make no more than 80 percent of the area's median income. Beyond aesthetics, construction design focused on long-term sustainability with considerations for inclement weather, product durability as well as energy and water efficiency.
The community will also be home to Silvio Palms Park, with a newly constructed play area for the green space.

βWeβre always so excited to see reactions from the families every time we complete a build,β said Tina Forcier, CEO at Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County. βTheyβve put in the sweat equity alongside amazing volunteers, and now these families can focus on creating memories in their new homes. Homeownership is something that should be afforded to all those in our community who want it and are willing to put in the hard work to achieve it.β
Eight families will participate in the dedication ceremony, including Air Force veteran Johanna Ramirez. After an honorable military discharge, Ramirez returned to civilian life and faced challenges finding employment and affordable housing.

βI had several jobs and bounced from apartment to apartment. I had no real stability,β Ramirez said. βIn 2017, I lost my job, could not find work, and had no income for three years. I ended up homeless.β
Things turned around for Ramirez through several support programs, and with a connection to Habitat Hillsborough, homeownership was finally within reach.
βWith a home, I will be able to gain equity and save some money. This will put me in the position of becoming more self-sufficient,β she said. βMy home will mean stability, a sense of belonging, a sanctuary, a place of comfort, love and peace.β
The ceremony will begin at 4 p.m., followed by guided tours of the homes and Silvio Palms Park. Those attending will include Damon Moorer, president/CEO of TCM Bank and board chair of Habitat Hillsborough, and County Commissioner Gwen Myers.
