Veterans Honored in Temple Terrace

The City of Temple Terrace had a Veterans Day celebration Friday to recognize those who have served in the United States military.

Veterans, their families, community leaders and citizens gathered Friday at the for the city’s annual .

The Highlander Pipes and Drum Band provided music outside. Inside, Cheri Tysver sang β€œAmerica the Beautiful,” β€œThe Star Spangled Banner” and β€œYou’re a Grand Old Flag,” and the NJROTC presented the colors.

The guest speaker was Mayor Joe Affronti, who talked about the history of Veterans Day and the importance of America’s veterans. He said when he was a kid during World War II, he remembered that every man felt obligated to serve his country.

β€œThank you for your sacrifices to our country,” Affronti said. β€œGod bless you, and God bless America.”

At the end of his speech, Affronti went into the audience and allowed each veteran to introduce him or herself.

Former City Councilman Kenneth Halloway served in the U.S. Army from 1957-85. He said he retired reluctantly and still considers himself serving.

β€œI’m proud to be among you today, and thank you so much for your sacrifice,” he told the other veterans.

At the end of the program, Tysver sang β€œGod Bless America,” which brought tears to the eyes of some in the audience, including Frank McConville, who served in the U.S. Army from 1966-68.

β€œThe memories of it are…” he began to say afterward before pausing. β€œIt’s just great to honor the veterans for their service.”
